"Where We Were" marks the debut of Alex Ward Item 4, a quartet with Otto Willberg, Andrew Lisle, and Charlotte Keeffe. As is customary for Ward, the music covers a broad stylistic base, weaving intricate and often highly emotive composed themes into a freewheeling improvisatory landscape.

"Where We Were" reveals a kinship with the extended energy curves of free jazz, but also hints at Ward's avant-rock leanings. The album was recorded during two live performances in London during September 2018.
