Recorded over the course of two years, the album blends country blues influences, improvisation, and experimental folk into a collection shaped as much by collaboration and circumstance as by careful composition.

Released as a collaboration between Centripetal Force (USA) and Ramble Records (Australia), KC Blues is being issued in a 200 copy vinyl pressing, as well as digitally. Preorders will go live June 15, with the album releasing on July 17.

The earliest ideas for KC Blues emerged from Coleman’s reaction to the political and cultural atmosphere of 2024. Immersed in the history of interwar Europe and drawn to parallels between that period and contemporary American life, Coleman initially imagined the record as a broader reflection on social instability and uncertainty. As the writing process continued into 2025, however, the songs became more personal and introspective. The finished album reflects feelings of confusion, exhaustion, and unease without presenting itself as direct commentary.

Like its predecessor, KC Blues was recorded entirely outside of traditional studios, taking shape in bedrooms, basements, and home recording spaces around Nashville. Technical limitations, scheduling conflicts, and broken equipment all became part of the process. Rather than smooth over every imperfection, Coleman often chose to keep performances that captured the right feeling, even if traces of those conditions remained in the recordings.

The album also marks a shift in Coleman’s creative approach. While Imaginary Conversations was largely built through layered overdubs and tightly arranged compositions, KC Blues leaves more room for spontaneity and collaboration. Trevor Nikrant (Styrofoam Winos, MJ Lenderman, Ryan Davis’s Roadhouse Band) played a central role throughout the recording process, encouraging experimentation and helping shape the album’s evolving sound. Several tracks grew out of open-ended recording sessions and live improvisation with fellow musicians Tommy Stangroom and J.W. Bird.

Coleman also drew heavily from the country blues and folk recordings that first inspired him to play guitar. Influences from 1920s and 30s blues traditions run throughout the album, alongside an interest in early field recordings and archival folk music. Those elements sit alongside the freer improvisational approach Coleman developed over the past few years of live performance.

The result is a record that balances structure and spontaneity, blending traditional influences with a more exploratory approach to arrangement and performance. With KC Blues, Coleman expands on the ideas introduced in Imaginary Conversations while moving toward a more collaborative and open-ended sound.

K.C.
