I ditched work for the afternoon and just spent time in the studio - a luxury, for sure.

During the afternoon I got into some pretty decent zones and then something clicked. This entire 49-minute piece is a chunk of that afternoon. It's a single shot, live improvisation of just Pro One + Sherman Filterbank (the deadliest combo in my arsenal). I liked the piece a lot, but sat on it for a bit thinking that it had potential for something more.

In the spring, after Foxy Digitalis relaunched I became acquainted with Toronto multi-instrumentalist Colin Fisher. I interviewed him for the site about his then-new solo record and we just kind of hit it off and kept in touch. I had originally thought about asking my old friend, Mike Weis, if he'd play drums on this, but it was around that time Colin started doing IG-live streams of him just going all out on drums. Another idea clicked. I asked him if he'd want to give it a shot and he was game. Since my part was 100% improvised, he decided not to listen to it at all before recording - he just hit play & record and went for it. It worked so well. And so I sat on it some more.

Fast forward to late in 2021 and I got an email with a promo from Catherine Sikora. I've been a big fan of hers and was really excited to be in touch. I knew I wanted to review what she sent me because it blew me away immediately and proposed we do an interview, too. During that period we got to know each other a little and felt a positive creative connection. I had always thought it would be amazing if this piece had some horn carnage on it so I figured, what the hell - let's see if she'd be up for it. She was excited to do it and so I sent off the files and a month later, I got her contribution back. Like Colin, she didn't listen to it at all first and her take is completely improvised. She is amazing.
Recherché by Catherine Sikora, Colin Fisher, & Brad Rose
